Observing together – collecting ocean observations to meet many needs (120632)
Our climate and oceans are changing rapidly, we need more data and information to understand where things are changing most and fastest to help inform our actions and decision-making. To generate much needed data, Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System deploys a range of ocean observing infrastructure to better understand our marine environment. This includes equipment to measure waves, ocean temperature, monitor water quality, track animal movements, and much more. All of the data IMOS collects is made available for use and re-use to answer critical questions about the state of the ocean and inform priority management issues. As climate change creates changes to the ocean, IMOS is seeking to increase our understanding of how this will affect our coasts and coastal communities. As we look to the future we recognise the role that First Nations people and Sea Ranger groups can play, and would like to expand co-design and collaboration to collect and share data that will help meet multiple needs. Co-designed approaches will ensure First Nations priorities, data and information needs are incorporated into planning, collection and delivery of ocean observations. Data collected through these efforts, in conjunction with Traditional Ecological Knowledge, will help develop a more holistic understanding of how our marine environments are changing, and what they might look like in the future. By observing together we can all learn more.
