Partnering with Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef (119188)
Partnering with Reef Traditional Owners is a key priority for Marine Parks (Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Reef Authority). We are committed to developing and strengthening these partnerships. We recognise that Traditional Owners' knowledge and management of Country is essential in delivering sustainable outcomes for the Great Barrier Reef with economic, social and cultural co-benefits for Traditional Owners and the broader community.
It is our vision to have Traditional Owners routinely participating in shared planning and management of Country alongside our Marine Parks staff and to increase Traditional Owner involvement in delivery of field activities - expanding our collective management of the Great Barrier Reef and its islands.
This brief presentation covers some of the ways we partner including: supporting Traditional Owners proficiency in the latest skills and practices in managing the Reef - as diver training, reef health and crown of thorns starfish surveys; supporting projects with Land and Sea Ranger Programs; undertaking joint marine park patrols; supporting leadership training and ranger placements.
